Kontra Daya denies urging Imee Marcos to resign as Senate poll reforms chair to back Robredo campaign

Election watchdog Kontra Daya did not ask Senator Imee Marcos to resign as chairperson of the Senate committee on electoral reforms in favor of Vice President Leni Robredo’s presidential bid, contrary to a claim posted by a supporter of presidential aspirant and dictator’s son Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

On March 28, Facebook user Benjie Jr Contreras circulated a claim, accompanied by a screenshot of a report from GMA News, blasting Kontra Daya convenor Danilo Arao and insinuating this in its caption:

WHO [ARE] YOU???????

(Why are you asking Sen. Imee Marcos to resign as chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and chairman of the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Automated Election System? Is it to cheat and prevent [poll watchers] to guard the Smartmatic-Comelec mafia on May 9 in favor of your Pink Mother?)

Nagpapatawa ka, hindi ka naman kalbo.

(You’re funny, you’re not even bald.)

“Pink Mother” refers to the Robredo camp whose campaign color is pink.

In an email to Vox Populi PH, Arao said “even at the risk of stating the obvious, Kontra Daya denies all false claims.”

Kontra Daya urged Imee to step down from her post due to a possible “conflict of interest” as her brother Marcos Jr. is vying for the presidential seat.

The senator also engaged in several campaign videos that targeted Robredo, her brother’s closest rival for the country’s highest office.

Citing a Facebook post by a group called XSOX, Imee and Senate President Vicente Sotto III, who is also running for vice president, earlier alleged a “serious security breach” involving Smartmatic, the software provider of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the upcoming national polls. This was later refuted by Comelec and Smartmatic officials.

In December 2020, Imee also filed Senate Bill No. 1950 or the Hybrid Election Bill, which sought a return to a manual tallying of votes at poll precincts based on a purported election fraud when her brother lost to Robredo for the vice presidency in 2016.

Marcos Jr. repeatedly appealed the case before the Supreme Court. The electoral protest was junked in a unanimous vote on Feb. 16, 2021.

As of writing, the misleading post has garnered 580+ reactions, 90+ comments and 30+ shares.
